Tomorrow they release the 1940 US Federal Census

01Apr12

For all of us data geeks, this is a big event.

From an Ancestry.com press release:

The National Archives and Records Administration will open the 1940 U.S. Federal Census on April 2, 2012—the first time this collection will be made available to the public.

I started looking into my family history in about 2008, so by then the 1930 census was available, and transcribed and indexed to the nth degree.

Being on the ground floor of a new census is exciting. I am fascinated at how different companies and services are going to handle the release of the images, followed by the indexing and metadata creation.

It feels akin to a wild west land rush.

Ancestry.com made me an “Ancestry Ace”, getting access to their new content the moment it is released.

Should be a fun ride.
