John Hancock (1737-1793), Signer

07Jul10

The most famous signature in the history of the world would have to be John Hancock’s flourish on the Declaration of Independence.

John Hancock was born in Quincy, MA (which at the time was still part of Braintree), not 3 miles from where I sit tonight.

He married into the Quincy clan, who were intermarried with the Adams, who intermarried into my Clevelands.

John Hancock was my 2nd cousin 9 times removed’s husband’s 2nd cousin once removed’s wife’s 2nd cousin once removed’s husband.

That isn’t related at all, but goes to show how small and interconnected Massachusetts was before the Revolution.
